How Do I Know How Much Railing I Need, and in What Lengths?

Step 1: Choose a log railing size:
• Limit spans of 3" railing to 6' or less.
• Limit spans of 4" railing to 8' or less.
Step 2: Choose a log post size:
• If you are using 5" - 6" posts, assume a 6" post size.
• If you are using 7" - 8" posts, assume an 8" post size.
Step 3: Determine the exact spacing of your posts. (See Step 1). We recommend drawing your layout on the floor.
Step 4: If you are ordering posts from us, determine the exact distance between the posts, and add 4". This will be the Rail Section Length (actual measurements plus 4") that you order.

If your posts are already built in place, determine the exact distance between the posts, and add 1". This will be the Rail Section Length (actual measurements plus 1") that you order.
Step 5: Determine how your post will be mounted: (See drawings on next page.)

• Top-Mount Posts or
• Lapped (Side-Mount) Posts.

• If you require Lapped, Side-Mount Posts, indicate whether your Corner Posts are:

Inside Corners or
Outside Corners

• If you require Lapped End-Posts, indicate whether the Railing comes into the post from :

the Right (IFR) or
the Left (IFL) (as you're standing on your deck or loft facing the post)
Step 6: Create an order list labeling your Railing Sections A-Z. (Remember Step 4.) Include on your list the number of each of the following types of Posts that you need:

End Posts (holes on one side)
In-Line Posts (holes that line up on both sides)
Corner Posts (holes on two sides that are 90° to each other)
